Pediatric Urinary Tract Infection Treatment

Pediatric Urological Care Treating Patients Across WNY

At Pediatric Urology of WNY, we treat common and uncommon urological conditions, including urinary tract infections (UTIs). Our providers will provide excellent care for your child from diagnosis to treatment.

About Urinary Tract Infections

While experienced only by a small percentage of children, UTIs can cause severe discomfort, long-term complications and even morbidity when they do occur. To avoid these outcomes, it’s important that they are diagnosed and treated promptly.

Diagnosis is typically done with a urine test. In some severe cases, a blood test may be required to test kidney function.

Common Symptoms

Identifying an illness or infection in your child can be difficult, especially when many of the symptoms aren’t visible. There are some signs that you can look for, though.

  • Crying while urinating
  • Foul-smelling urine or diapers
  • Frequent need to urinate
  • Cloudy urine
  • Blood in urine
  • Back pain
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Chills
  • Fever

UTI Treatment for Kids

Antibiotics are used to treat UTIs. They are most commonly administered by mouth but may also be administered intravenously in some cases.

Additionally, fluids and medications for pain management may be prescribed.
