Undescended Testicle(s)

An undescended testicle(s) is described as a testicle that has not moved down into its proper place in the scrotum. Your urologist will need to perform a physical exam to diagnose the undescended testicle. An ultrasound may also be done to identify the location of the testicle(s).

When to Seek Treatment for Undescended Testicle(s)

Undescended testicles are most commonly seen in babies, and the testicles will often move down independently within a few months. If the undescended testicle(s) do not lower into the correct place by themselves, surgery may be required.

If your child receives treatment while still a baby, this reduces the risk of potential health problems later on.

Common Treatments

Treating undescended testicle(s) before the age of 18 months typically offers the best outcome, reducing the risks of later health conditions.  Surgery is the most common form of treatment.

Surgery

This surgery, called an orchiopexy, involves a surgeon moving the testicle(s) into the scrotum and using a couple of stitches to hold it in place. It is typically performed on children aged 12 to 24 months. Orchiopexy has a high success rate.
